Photographing this wedding was special because I knew both the bride and groom from high school water polo. But first, let me explain something important. When I was in 9th grade, I recruited all my friends to play water polo. We didn’t have enough girls playing each summer, and we needed more if we were going to build a winning team. Our coach tasked us to recruit as many girls as we possibly could. One at a time, I pressured each of my friends to play a sport they knew nothing about. Megan was one of those friends.
Meanwhile, Garrett played polo for our high school rival team, Sonora. But each summer Oakdale and Sonora would combine to compete in a big tournament. So we all knew of each other. But Garrett was that quiet goalie who played for Sonora, and Megan was the outgoing girl who played for Oakdale.
After high school, both Megan and Garrett went on to play water polo at Delta Junior College. That’s when they started dating. And the rest is history. They now both coach water polo at Oakdale.
I like to imagine I played some part in their meeting. But when I’m honest with myself, I don’t think I did. And here’s my thinking; if you join a sport to appease your friend, it seems only fitting that the sport leads you to find your best friend/future husband.
